Domaine Des Saumades

Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc
Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge
Domaines des Saumades was created in 1995 by Murielle and Franck Mousset. Frank has proven to be a dynamic winemaker worthy of his illustrious pedigree. His grandfather, the dynamic Louis Mousset, purchased Château des Fines Roches in 1936 and switched it into one of the most successful estates in the Rhône, now a beautiful hotel and restaurant. Louis’ many descendents today own several estates across the South of France.
Franck has leveraged his ancestry and a lifelong immersion in the fine art of winemaking to craft glorious wines made from some of the Châteauneuf du Pape’s most popular grape varieties – Grenache Blanc, with the ancient Bourboulenc and Clairette for the whites, and 100% Grenache for the red Châteauneuf du Pape.
At 2.25 hectares, Saumades is the smallest domaine in the Châteauneuf du Pape AOC. As a result, Franck is able to pay meticulous attention to detail and his stamp of approval goes into every wine, of which only about 500 cases are produced annually.
After picking the white grapes are crushed in a pneumatic bladder press, then fermented and aged in small neutral oak barrels around the lees before bottling after 12 months. The red grapes are completely destemmed and fermented in a large conrete vat with heat controls. After fermentation the red wines are aged in small oak barrels, 25% of which are new, for up to 18 months.
Châteauneuf du Pape, or new castle of the Pope, has a long and illustrious winemaking history that dates back to 1308 when Pope Clement V relocated his papacy to the city of Avignon. He was said to be a great lover of wine and did much to promote it. Today, the wines from this AOC have enjoyed significant resurgence in popularity in the United States thanks in part to the advocacy of wine critics like Robert Parker, and their remarkable price / quality ratio.

Domaine Colin

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles
Michel Colin-Deléger traces his Chassagne-Montrachet lineage through both sides of his family, having inherited vineyards from the original Colins who settled in the appellation in the 1850s, and from his father-in-law, the great George Deléger. Since creating his eponymous winery in 1987, he has forged an enviable reputation as one of the finest producers of this Burgundian region, crafting distinguished Premiers and Grands Crus wines that offer abundant ripe fruit aromas, concentrated flavors and layered complexity.
Although Michel’s sons, Philippe and Bruno, manage the operations of the original Domaine Colin-Deléger today (now Domaines Philippe and Bruno Colin, respectively), he still actively oversees the production of wines from three prized and neighboring vineyards – Chassagne Premier Cru en Remilly,” the famous Puligny Premier Cru Les Demoiselles”, and its neighboring Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet.
Over the last few decades, Michel has mastered his craft and production of wine follows his exacting standards. During harvest, for example, grapes are sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery. Michel refers to the elevage of his wines as traditional” for white Burgundy, yet the tiny quantities he is producing call for a few technical tweaks. After a relatively quick pneumatic pressing the juice settles in tank for a night before descending into casks in the cellar. The Chassagne 1er Cru en Remilly sees about 25% new oak barrels of 225 liters, but the Chevalier-Montrachet is in one larger, custom-made, 360 liter cask of new oak. The Puligny 1er Cru Les Demoiselles is vinified in one old and one new custom casks.
Fermentation is relatively slow in Michel’s cold cellar, with malolactic usually finishing the spring after the harvest. Long lees aging is preferred, with only occasional (every other week) batonnage. Bottling takes place in the spring after 15 months of patient aging. Wines worth waiting for.

Domaine Coffinet

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Blanchots Dessus

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Fairendes
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Grands Clos
Chassagne-Montrachet Les Blanchots Dessous Village
Chassagne-Montrachet rouge Les Voillenots”
The intimate Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay is located in the illustrious village of Chassagne, in the southern Côte de Beaune. The estate is owned by Phillippe Duvernay and his partner Laura Coffinet who set out on their winemaking opportunity with just seven vineyards, including the Grand Cru Batard Montrachet. Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay encompasses seven hectares across the appellation in total, four of which are dedicated to its exceptional white wines, in particular Chassagne, and three to reddish.
While the pair share in the management of this professional boutique winery, Phillippe oversees the vineyards, where yields are strictly controlled, and cellars. He offers adopted a traditional Burgundian approach to vinification, with pneumatic pressing of the grapes, followed by an over night natural settling of the lees in tank. Following this debourbage, the wine descends by gravity for its fermentation in barrique. Philippe, uses only 25-30% fresh oak barrels for ageing, which endures for 12 to 15 weeks depending on the quality of the vintage. The exception is with the Domaine’s Batard Montrachet Grand Cru, which uses up to 50% fresh barrels, depending on its concentration.
All in all, intense concentration of aromas and flavors are the prevalent characteristics of the estate’s beautiful wines, which are capable of aging for decades. Their Chassagne Villages wine is made entirely from your vineyard climat of Les Blanchots Dessous, which lies just south of Criots Batard Montrachet. They also present a remarkable collection of Chassagne Premiers Crus vineyard sites, including Fairendes (the top, northern portion of Morgeot), Caillerets and Maltroie. Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay is definitely fortunate to own parcels of the two Premiers Crus sites that abut the great Grand Cru Montrachet itself, Dent de Chien and Les Blanchots Dessus, which Philippe affectionately refers to as Pied de Montrachet.”
